Thursday 16th April was the first of the Herefordshire Junior Football Leagues 8 Supplementary Cup Finals to be held at various locations within the city during the coming week.
First up was the U11’s The Lexmond Cup held at Victoria Park, home of Hereford Junior Dynamos. The final was between Bartestree and Kington Town, this proved to be a well matched affair held in very difficult conditions. Bartestree took a first half lead with Kington equalising in the dying minutes of the game. Extra time started with Kington looking to take up where they left off only to find the Bartestree goalkeeper in fine form. Extra time finshed with no further goals and the dreaded penalty shoot out was now with us. Unfortunately for Kington it didn’t go as they would have wanted it and Bartestree came out on top to win.
Saturday 18th April was the opportunity of the U9’s and U10’s with both games held at Allpay park home of Westfield’s FC.
The U9 Buddy’s Cup was between local club Hinton FC and Leominster Minors. The first half was evenly matched but the slightly more experienced Minors started to dominate the game in the second period and went on to win 3-0.
This was followed by the U10 Vianen Vase, again Hinton FC was represented against another local club Pegasus Juniors.
Pegasus started the more positive and gained an early goal but Hinton didn’t give up and battled hard to gain the equaliser. Both teams looked hard for the winning goal but fine saves from both the young keepers kept the score to 1-1 at the end of normal time. In to extra time and both teams came close to that important goal but both keepers were outstanding. So with the scores still locked at 1-1 it was down to the lottery of a penalty shoot out just like the U11’s with Pegasus Juniors just shading out Hinton to win 3-2.
Sunday 19th saw the turn of the U13’s in the morning and U15’s in the afternoon. The morning game was the Brederodes Cup between 2nd placed Weston Rebels and 7th placed Credenhill. The game was played at Broomy Hill home of Hinton FC. Credenhill started the game in fine form and just shaded the first half. Although scores level 0-0 at half time Credenhill did hit the crossbar twice. Weston started the second half stronger and took a 1-0 lead with an individual goal from there number 10. All credit to Credenhill they dug in and eventually found the equaliser. Two more goals towards the end of the game from Credenhill made the final score 3-1.
The U15 Stuart Sheehan Cup, was held at Allpay Park, Westfields FC and was contested by Hereford Junior Dynamos and Leominster Minors. The first twenty to twenty five minutes was a tentative affair with very little to separate either team but a more direct approach by the young Dynamos keeper changed that with the Dynamos striker latching on to the goal kick and chipping it over the on rushing Leominster keeper. It was then more relaxed, with Dynamos starting to dominate the game and at half time were in a comfortable position with a 2-0 lead. However in the second half Leominster started to push forward with more determination and pulled a couple of goals back and for some time had the better of the game but some clever inter passing restored Dynamos lead. They had to continue to work hard against a Leominster team that were determined not to give in. Dynamos finally overcame there spirited opponents 5-2.
Thursday 23rd April
The U12 IMI Mouldings Cup Final took place at Old School Lane, Pegasus FC between Weston Park and FC Phoenix.
Both teams were well supported and got behind them from the start. Phoenix started the stronger and eventually took a 1-0 lead which they held at half time although Weston finshed the half stonger.
Weston came out looking for an equalizer which came from a well taken goal. The remainder of the game flowed from end to end with no further goals. Weston did come closest in the dying minutes when they hit the bar twice.
Extra time came and went with the score still at 1-1. Penalties now came in to force, the Weston goalkeeper made two fine saves which helped them win the penalty shoot out and the IMI Mouldings Cup.
Sunday 26th April 2009
The final two Supplementary Cup Finals were held today at Bartestree FC. We kicked off this morning with the U14 Tudor Building Supplies between Orleton and Leominster Minors. Leominster started the stronger and went in at half time with a considerable lead. Second half got under way with Orleton putting up more of a fight but lost one of there players to a shoulder injury and then had to replace the goalkeeper. Orleton did not give up and eventually scored a consolation goal, but Leominster ran out worthy winners 7-1.
The afternoon saw the U16 Russell Jenkins Memorial Trophy contested by Pegasus Juniors and Leominster Minors and what a treat was in store. Pegasus started the stronger and soon found themselves with a 2-0 lead. Leominster probed away and got a goal back only for Pegasus to score a third. As half time approached Leominster were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. The ball was drilled low towards the goal and crept inside the right hand side post. Five first half goals what more could we expect! The second half was under way Pegasus decided to give us three more well taken goals, at this point I think we all thought the game was over but Leominster had other ideas. They started to play the ball around and use the wings and in no time Leominster were 6-5 in front. This time it was the turn of Pegasus to fight back which they did no 6-6 as the game was closing in on the final minutes when we all thought extra time would be played a cross came in from the right hand side to the back post where a Pegasus player was waiting to head in to the goal 7-6. No time for any more goals and the game ended with a 7-6 win for Pegasus. Both sets of players must be congratulated for giving the spectators such a great game to watch and not giving up when things were not going there way.
